September 17 is Gonzaga’s Historic First Day - the day on which GU opened its doors in 1887. It is also when mass of the Holy Spirit takes place. The Gonzaga University community gathers at the start of every new academic year to celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit, a tradition at Jesuit high schools and universities since 1548. The purpose of this liturgy is to pray for God’s Spirit of wisdom, guidance and inspiration for the administration, faculty, staff, and students. It truly is an occasion for the entire campus to gather, regardless of faith or creed, as we rededicate ourselves to the mission at Gonzaga University. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are available to all people.
